Back from China
Hello FOPP! I was in China last week- in Shenzhen to be exact. I flew from Raleigh to Atlanta to San Francisco to Hong Kong and then took a car across the border into Shenzhen. Quite a trip. Quite an adventure. I am still jet lagged and therefore writing this at 6:40 am, but I am gradually getting back on EST. It was an interesting experience. I went to a state dinner where this band was playing these upright sticks with three strings attached to some sort of amplifier at the bottom- they absolutely rocked out- and played, of all things- a theme song from a John Wayne movie. I am always interested in TV in foreign countries and China did not disappoint. Every night they had a series of movies from the US from the 1970s. One in particular- a show called "Kung Fu" but not with David Carradine, it was about this guy with a big afro who was on the olympic king fu team doing righteous deeds, fighting the mob- I had never seen it before. It was funny, they had NO budget, and even a cop car responding to a call was a small model- it was funny. LOts of bad guys flying through glass doors, glass windows, train windows- all very, very funny. There were no commercials, which made it even better. I only saw one commercial on TV the whole time I was there- it was for a mop. Very unusual. Anyway, Rock and roll is huge there, with people actually sporting the Elvis look (ah the king), and Mily Cyrus on TV non-stop singing "Party in the USA" how totally bizzare!!!!

Paranormal Activity
I saw the movie "Paranormal Activity" last night and I liked it. My wife was terrified. I was not so much terrified, but was viewing it from a writer's point of view to see if I liked the script and I did. Some of the special effects were very, very good; one in particular, which kind of threw me as I could not tell how they did it on a 15,000 budget. I can see this movie making 100 Million easy- the theatre was crowded and there was a lot of scared people in the audience. This was of course magnified by someone banging on the outside of the exit door during the film, which freaked everybody out and made the whole experience more memorable. Short movie, no credits (?) at the end; and truly an exercise in building suspense. I would recommend it if you like scary stuff.

Checking in with FOPP
I had a friend of mine, older fellow, CEO of a company I was consulting for out in San Diego- and one afternoon we were down by the water and a sub floated by; very cool; and he described the make and model like it was a Chevy Malibu; and I said- "How do you know so much about submarines," and he says- "Oh, I was a sub commander during the cold war," and I thought that was something; so it was not the first time I had come in contact with the silent service; so I asked the kicker- "How fast and how deep can they go?" to which his reply was- "No Comment," and then I knew he was legit, because they cannot talk about those two items at all. Good for Brandon. Subs are very interesting, very expensive rides; and not all Navy gets to go aboard. Tell Brandon to stay focused and study physics with en emphasis upon fluid dynamics and sonar. He may also get a jump ahead if he studies multi-spectrum signature theory, i.e. X-ray, infrared, etc., Go Navy.
