Skateboards
Ed, I got into skateboarding because you got into skatebarding back in the 1970's. When I think about that now, it occurs to me that that was pretty Ninja of us to be skateboarding back then. Tony Hawk for example, is our age, and he would have been skateboarding at the same time, but in LA, 3000 niles away. So where did you get the skateboard influence from?

I tried a few times but it just never felt like a viable mode of transport. I never learned to jump the thing and found my bike to be a much more efficient way of getting to 7-11.
My son did quite a bit of boarding a few years ago, but his was a long board about a foot wide and over three feet long. That I might have liked.
If I had to take a guess it would have derived from roller skates and since I felt dorky doing that I move right into skateboarding. I don't recall being the first boarder among us but I do remember being the first with the "neoprene speed" wheels. I remember working on them on the picnic table to make them better and of course faster.
My son never got into boarding at all. My mom bought him a scooter board, but he never took it out of the box. I handed it off to some kid a few years later on the street who was envious of his brother using the same one. My son is kinda into bmx.
I was fond of trying to skateboard as close to parked car fenders as possible.
